ALAN ABRAHAMS

Portable aka Alan Abrahams emerged from the post-apartheid era of South Africa, representing the generation that fought for freedom alongside Nelson Mandela. As a celebrated live performer, he relocated to London in 1997, where he began recording under the moniker Portable. In 2007, Portable relocated to Lisbon, Portugal, where he recorded the album Powers of Ten for his own label Süd Electronic. A series of acclaimed albums followed, including "Futuristic Experiments #005" and "Cycling", which won a Red Dot graphic design award. In 2010, he moved to Berlin, releasing hits like "This Life of Illusion", on legendary Berlin record label Perlon, which Groove Magazine praised for its timeless Chicago house influence. Portable gained wider recognition in 2014 when his track "Surrender" was named "Best New Track" by Pitchfork and featured on DJ Koze’s acclaimed DJ-Kicks mix, the top mix of 2015 by Resident Advisor. Signing with !K7 in 2016, he released his most personal album, "Alan Abrahams", which received critical acclaim from Pitchfork and NPR. In 2018, he launched Khoikhoi Records in Paris, promoting South African artists in Europe. His album "The Transit of Mercury" received rave reviews in 2020, and his 2022 release "My Sentient Shadow" with Circus Company was praised for its exploration of identity and belonging. With "Ascend", Alan Abrahams presents his first album under his own name on Italic Recordings, release in 2025.
